A Streetcar Named Desire Summary

Blanche DuBois, a Mississippi schoolteacher, arrives in Stella Kowalski’s New Orleans apartment. Despite the fact that Blanche seems to have lost contact with Stella, she want to remain in Stella’s apartment for an indefinite but most likely lengthy period of time, given the large trunk she carries. Blanche informs Stella that their family house, Belle Reve, was lost when all of their last relatives died. She also says that because of her anxiety, she was given a leave of absence from her teaching job.

Blanche is displeased with the Kowalskis’ two-room flat and its location in a loud, varied, working-class neighbourhood, despite the fact that she does not seem to have enough money to stay in a hotel. Stella’s husband, Stanley Kowalski, an auto-parts supply man of Polish descent, immediately disapproves of Blanche’s social snobbery. Stella has clearly chosen to put her social pretensions aside in exchange for her husband’s sexual pleasure; she is even pregnant with his child. Blanche is immediately distrusted by Stanley, who suspects her of cheating Stella of half of the family inheritance. While defending herself to Stanley, Blanche reveals that Belle Reve was lost due to a defaulted mortgage, a revelation that illustrates Blanche’s dire financial status. Blanche’s continual drinking, which she attempts to conceal from her sister and brother-in-law, is another sign that something is very wrong with her.

When Stanley organises a drunken poker game with his male mates at the apartment, the misery that comes with Stella and Stanley’s primal attraction is exposed. Blanche gets under Stanley’s skin when she starts dating Mitch, one of his closest friends. After Mitch has been out for a long time, speaking with Blanche in the bedroom, Stanley comes in, storms into the bedroom, and tosses the radio out the window. After Stella yells at him and defends Blanche, Stanley beats her up. Blanche and Stella rush to their upstairs neighbour, Eunice’s apartment, when the males haul him away from the poker game. Stanley repents and seeks Stella’s forgiveness a short time afterwards. Stella returns to Stanley and embraces him passionately, much to Blanche’s displeasure. Outside the Kowalski residence, Mitch runs into Blanche and soothes her.

Blanche attempts the following day to encourage Stella to leave Stanley for a better partner of her social status. Blanche suggests that she and Stella contact Shep Huntleigh, a billionaire, for help getting out of New Orleans; when Stella laughs, Blanche reveals that she is completely destitute. When Blanche makes fun of him, Stanley arrives and quietly overhears Blanche and Stella’s conversation. He threatens Blanche later, implying that he has heard rumours about her shady past. She seems to be disturbed.

When Blanche is alone in her apartment one evening, waiting for Mitch to pick her up for a date, a teenage child comes by to collect money for the newspaper. Despite the fact that Blanche has no money, she pursues him and kisses him lustfully. Mitch arrives soon after the youngster has left, and the two begin their date. Blanche is fatigued when she arrives, and she is plainly concerned about the rumours Stanley mentioned earlier. Blanche reveals her greatest sadness in a very open and honest heart-to-heart chat with Mitch. Years ago, when she found and scolded her young husband for being gay, he committed himself. Mitch tells Blanche about his own loss of a prior relationship and assures her that they need each other.

By the time the next scene starts, a month has passed. Blanche’s birthday is today, and it’s her birthday afternoon. When Stanley enters the room where Stella is preparing a supper for Blanche, Mitch, Stanley, and herself, he informs her that he has learned about Blanche’s scandalous past. After losing the DuBois house, he believes Blanche moved into a run-down motel, from which she was eventually booted owing to her various sexual liaisons. She was also fired from her teaching job when the principal found out she was having an affair with a teen student. Stella is taken aback when she finds out that Stanley has informed Mitch about Blanche.

The birthday celebrations come and go, but Mitch never appears. Stanley informs Blanche that he is aware of her background. As a birthday gift, he gives her a one-way bus ticket back to Laurel. Stella is so enraged by Stanley’s harshness that it seems the Kowalski household is about to fall apart, but the onset of Stella’s labour prevents the dispute.

Blanche is inebriated and alone in her apartment after a few hours. Mitch, who is also drunk, comes in and repeats what Stanley has told him. Blanche finally concedes that the tales are true, but she also reveals that since her husband’s death, she has craved human connection. Mitch tells Blanche that he is unable to marry her because she is unable to live with his mother. She attempts to have sex with Mitch after realising she isn’t the chaste lady she seemed to be, but she forces him to leave by yelling “Fire!” to catch the attention of passers-by outside.

Blanche is considerably more intoxicated when Stanley returns from the hospital. She tells him that she and her previous suitor, wealthy Shep Huntleigh, would be departing New Orleans shortly. Stanley is well aware that Blanche’s storey is all made up, but he is so ecstatic with his kid that he suggests they both rejoice in their good fortune. Blanche rejects Stanley, and the situation escalates. As she tries to get by him, he refuses to move out of her way. Blanche gets frightened and shatters a bottle on the table, threatening to hit Stanley in the face. Stanley grabs her arm and informs her that the “date” they’ve been arranging since Blanche arrived is finally here. Blanche fights back, but Stanley uses his physical might to defeat her and put her to bed. Stanley has raped Blanche, according to the pulsating music.

The next scene occurs several weeks later, when Stella and her neighbour, Eunice, are packing Blanche’s stuff. Blanche is having a bath, while Stanley is in the front room playing poker with his mates. Blanche thinks she is leaving to join her millionaire, but she will be taken to a mental hospital by a doctor who will come soon. Stella tells Eunice that she doesn’t believe Blanche when she claims Stanley raped her. Blanche comes from the restroom, her delirious words suggesting that she has lost touch with reality.

Blanche becomes terrified and fights the doctor and nurse as they attempt to take her away. Stanley and his pals are battling Blanche, while Eunice restrains Stella to keep her from interfering. Mitch sobs uncontrollably. Finally, the doctor comes up to Blanche and gently persuades her to join him. She doesn’t glance back or say goodbye as he leads her away. Stella tears as she cradles her baby, and Stanley consoles her with nice words and gentle touches.
