About To Kill a Mocking Bird

During the Great Depression (1929–39), To Kill a Mockingbird is set in the fictitious town of Maycomb, Alabama. The plot revolves on Jean Louise (“Scout”) Finch, an extremely bright little girl who grows up between the ages of six and nine in the book. Atticus Finch, her widowed father, raises her and her brother, Jeremy Atticus (“Jem”). Atticus is a well-respected and well-known lawyer. He instils in his children the values of empathy and justice, constantly leading by example.

When one of the town’s Black citizens, Tom Robinson, is wrongly accused of raping Mayella Ewell, a young white lady, despite threats from the community, Atticus volunteers to defend him. Although Atticus prepares a defence that explains the facts in a more believable way—that Mayella was assaulted by her father, Bob Ewell—Tom is found guilty.

Later, while attempting to flee arrest, he is slain. Meanwhile, the youngsters act out their own little drama. Scout and Jem are particularly taken by Arthur (“Boo”) Radley, a local hermit who communicates with them by putting little presents in a tree. When Bob Ewell attempts to harm Scout and Jem on Halloween, Boo intervenes and protects them. Ewell is eventually killed by Boo. The sheriff, on the other hand, chooses to inform the town that Ewell’s death was the result of an accident.

About To Kill a Mocking Bird Summary

Scout Finch lives in the tranquil Alabama hamlet of Maycomb with her brother, Jem, and their widowed father, Atticus. The Great Depression is wreaking havoc in Maycomb, but Atticus is a renowned lawyer, and the Finch family is quite well off in compared to the rest of society. Jem and Scout meet Dill, a youngster who has moved into their neighbourhood for the summer, and the three of them play out tales together. Dill eventually develops an interest in the Radley Place, a creepy mansion on their block. Mr. Nathan Radley owns the home, and his brother, Arthur (nicknamed Boo), has stayed there for years without leaving.

Scout attends school for the first time in the autumn and dislikes it. She and Jem discover presents left for them in a tree knothole on the Radley property. The next summer, Dill returns, and he, Scout, and Jem begin acting out the tale of Boo Radley. Atticus puts a halt to their pranks, advising the kids to try to see things from someone else’s point of view before passing judgement. The three sneak into the Radley property on Dill’s final night in Maycomb for the summer, when Nathan Radley fires at them. During the following getaway, Jem loses his pants. He finds them patched and strung over the fence when he returns for them.

The next winter, Jem and Scout discover additional gifts under the tree, which they assume were left by the mysterious Boo. Nathan Radley finally uses cement to fill the knothole. A fire breaks out in another neighbor’s home shortly after, and as Scout is watching the flames, someone drapes a blanket over her shoulders. Jem informs Atticus about the patched pants and the gifts, certain that Boo did it.

To the chagrin of Maycomb’s bigoted white town, Atticus undertakes to represent Tom Robinson, a Black man accused of raping a white lady. Even when they spend Christmas in the family compound on Finch’s Landing, Jem and Scout are exposed to harassment from other youngsters as a result of Atticus’ choice. Calpurnia, the Finches’ Black chef, leads them to the local Black church, where the youngsters are embraced by the friendly and close-knit congregation.
